This section should take up to 30 minutes to complete.
Mechanical assembly is divided into 5 parts:
- Secure Wire Joints
- Mount Motors & Wheels
- Speaker Enclosure & Holder
- Mount PCB & Battery Pack
- MP3-Player Holder
You’ll need your hot glue gun and the remaining parts left in your DanceBot Kit in this part of the tutorial.
1. Secure Wire Joints
You may find that the wire connected to the motors, as well as the wires connected from the PCB to the battery pack and audio jack, break over time. We can strengthen these connections by adding a little hot glue.
2. Mount Motors & Wheels
Motors can be mounted to the mechanical base with hot glue. Ensure that the right-motor (indicated on the PCB by ‘Motor-R’) goes on the right-side of the base and left-motor (‘Motor-L’) on the left side. The DanceBot’s forward direction is indicated on the PCB by a Chevron symbol (>>).
3. Speaker Enclosure & Holder
Try cupping the speaker with your hands and you’ll find that the quality of sound produced by the speaker improves. Supplied in the DanceBot Kit is a cardboard cup. Apply a bit of hot glue around the perimeter of the speaker and/or cardboard cup and stick them together.
The speaker and cup can be mounted to the mechanical base using wire clothes-hanger (or something equivalent). For example, bend the wire into the desired shape and thread the wire through the mechanical base to create a third-leg that will keep the DanceBot upright. Feel free to add some hot glue to secure the parts in place.
4. Mount PCB & Battery Pack
Use some hot glue to stack the PCB, battery pack, and mechanical base on top of one another.
5. MP3-Player Holder
You can use some craft pipe-cleaner or clothes-hanger wire to make a holder for your MP3-player. This step will require some imagination on your part as MP3-players can differ in size and shape.
When you’re done,
- Switch on the battery pack
- Attach the audio jack cable of your DanceBot’s PCB to your computer’s headphone jack
- Play this song to test the DanceBot’s full functionality.
